Our Top Video Interview Tips
Video interviews…the new normal ey? Companies are switching to video interviews to hire fresh talent during the lockdown. While the world gets back on its feet, here are our top tips to ace your upcoming interviews…
1. Check your tech
Testing makes perfect! Check your internet connection, camera and audio beforehand. You should also download the program (whether it be Skype, FaceTime, Zoom, BlueJeans, GoToMeeting, Microsoft Team) ahead of time.
2. Charge it
What could be worse than having a great interview end abruptly due to a dead battery? Make sure that your device is fully charged or plugged in during the interview!
3. Two words: Sticky notes
Put sticky notes with keywords or questions around your computer screen to jog your memory. We also recommend putting a sticky note with an arrow next to your camera to keep your eyes looking directly to the camera and not at yourself!
4. Get your space right
First things first, make sure your interview space is distraction-free – no noise, clutter, kids, pets, you name it! Choose an appropriate and professional background and make sure that any light sources are facing you. Turn off all applications and notifications on your laptop and put that phone on silent.
5. Elevate your laptop
Position your camera at eye-level so you are looking directly at the person. Prop it up on some books or pillows to get the right height.
6. Be careful with your clothing choice
Patterns do not necessarily work as well on video as they do in person – striped shirts and videos do not get along! Wear solid colours that do not blend into your background. The focus should be on you.
7. Practice beforehand to build confidence
Set up your computer or phone, hit record and practice over and over again until you feel comfortable being on camera.
8. Treat it the same as a face-to-face interview
Make sure you do the same interview preparations as you would do for a face-to-face interview. Research the company, review your skills and gather examples, and practice common interview questions.
